When attending a Formula 1 race, it’s essential to consider what to wear to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. While there isn’t a specific dress code, practicality, comfort, and the atmosphere of the event should guide your choices.
Never been to a race before? We’ve got your back. Based on our past experience from attending the Singapore Grand Prix, we share our recommendations on what to wear to any F1 race around the world.
Comfort with Style
Comfortable clothing is key for a day at the race track. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that will keep you comfortable throughout the day. Choose clothes appropriate for the weather conditions at the circuit.
For hot and sunny races held in Summer, light-colored and loose-fitting clothes are ideal, while cooler races may require layering with a jacket or sweater. At the Singapore Grand Prix, where it is humid but the day’s events are from the evening till night, we recommend a comfortable top, shorts, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun in the afternoon. In contrast, at races with cooler and drier climates, jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a light jacket would be suitable.
Don’t forget to consider your outfit to fit the concerts that often accompany Formula 1 Grand Prix events. Some races feature live performances by popular artists and bands, adding to the overall entertainment.
We love this outfit sported by Gabriela Paschoal, captured by Kym Illman at the 2023 Barcelona Grand Prix. It’s both stylish & comfortable and can be changed up to also suit races in different climates by layering for cooler climates or replacing them with shorts for warmer areas.
Proper Footwear
When it comes to footwear, prioritise comfort and support as you’ll likely be walking and standing for long periods. Opt for closed-toe shoes to protect your feet in crowded areas. Athletic sneakers or walking shoes are popular choices.
From our experience, we highly recommend considering the venue at which the post-race entertainment acts are held at. At the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, the main stage was at the Padang. As it was a rainy weekend, everyone’s shoes were soaking in mud at the end of the day which was very unfortunate for white sneaker wearers.
Stay Protected from the Sun
Headgear and accessories are important to protect yourself from the elements and enhance your experience. Wearing a hat or cap is advisable to shield yourself from the sun. Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare.
You might even get spotted by your favourite driver by wearing a unique hat like this chilli bucket hat that caught the attention of Carlos Sainz. But if you forget to bring a hat, there will be lots of merchandise stands where you can get a cap from your favourite team 🙂
